The Night Witches

Post by Bunny » Mon Mar 16, 2009 4:38 pm

Sorry to hijack this forum but I found this article which I found very interesting and possibly little known, certainly by me.

It details how a group of Soviet female fighter pilots from the 588th Night Bomber Regiment became known as the Night Witches. They flew the PO2 biplane and had some unusual tactics.

Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipes lowly?
Did the rifles fir o'er you as they lowered you down?
Did the bugles sound The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?

Not hijacking at all old chap - i dont have time to do much in here any more so anything that can be posted by anyone is more than welcome.

Gunther Rall mentions in his Logbook how much of a pain in the bum the Nightwitches were to German airfields. Brave ladies the lot of them.
