God I hate technology

Post by Tom » Fri Apr 28, 2017 7:23 pm

1. Deliveries too late to be installed when I might be able to.

2. Case too big to open and get into easily whilst it sits under my desk.

3. F'ing cats.

4. Thinking I'd killed my pc whilst installing a USB card...

5. Only to finally see (after umpteen minutes) that I'd somehow dislodged the on/off button wires from the mobo.

6. Figuring out the best pci-slot is the most awkward b*stard to get to.

7. Resting elbow and full weight on pci cover slot metal thing.

8. Losing screws.

9. Poxy pci slot doesn't work, so I have to put it in another one.

Over an hour to get a usb pci- card working.

Gah

10. Trying to install something when nowhere doe sit say the space needed on your pc.

11. Realising that a controller dongle is so big it means I'll have to leave the top cover off my pc.

Sounds like fun and games. I'm no longer in that world as a profession thank goodness, but I'm sure that I'll probably have similar experiences once I decide to upgrade again hehe

Oculus Rift since I only have room to play sitting down. I also ordered the PCI expansion card to get USB 3.1 that it needs. Should all arrive today from Amazon.

My thoughts - graphical quality isn't as good as I'd like but overall it is great. Far better sense of immersion, depth perception and pretty much everything.

It hurts a bit not to have pin sharp graphics like a monitor but that'll come.

Some fiddling to get it setup but all I can say is wow!

It's being in the cockpit rather than looking at one on the monitor. Suddenly you are aware of the actual size of the instruments and how close you are to the window glass. When I took a flight in a Tiger Moth I was surprised at how small the instruments were and how close to them you're sat and this is exactly the same.

The resolution could be improved, it's like sitting too close to a TV. Also I noticed some slight motion sickness after my first session. But as a former VR sceptic I'm sold.

You'll soon forget about the resolution and you'll acclimatise to any motion sickness the more you fly. The moment you feel queezy stop immediately, have a break until you feel ok then go back in.
Glad it's made you say Wow, welcome the future.

Get Oculus Tray Tool as it makes the basic SS and ASW settings automatic so you don't have to remember to do that stuff.

Practice landing too as you are higher off the ground than you feel in 2D.

For me the biggest wow was that everything feels more to correct scale now, so you fire at 100m knowing you're at 100m.

Oh yes, the FW bar is no longer an issue. It is almost as if they did in fact design the cockpit dimensions exactly and purposefully and it just needed VR to make it all click.

The 190 is so nice in VR, loads of power, great all round view, massive firepower, lovely.

I implemented this tweak from advice on the forums, it sure helps the terrain look better for me.

ps Prangster, with the OTT you don't need to run the debug tool, and make sure you disable ASW otherwise reticules flicker especially in the 109.

The terrain .cfg file mentioned by Blackjack above really does help too.

Putting this link up here for Prangster, gets rid of the blue chaperone circle.
