Mission building post patch 3.201

Post by Silk » Tue Oct 01, 2019 11:06 pm

Gents,

We're going to need to have a very careful think about how some of the aspects of the new graphics capabilities of the game are going to impact on our missions. In particular the new view distances are going to massively impact on things like how far away aircraft can/should spawn/despawn and things like that. The further away we can see air objects, the more time commanders will have to plan attacks/avoidance and, of course, if we can see things that we've already hit retreating from the encounter area, they may need to stay active a lot longer until we would realistically have trouble seeing them, thus adding to the demands on the servers.

The missions over the next couple of weeks are very much going to be a challenge to come up with work-arounds and scenarios, but I would like to suggest that we do our best for now and try to arrange a date and time when we can get together online to try and come up with some answers. I would particularly like Prangster to be a part of that as his experience is so valuable, and we should probably have Tom along as well to stop us getting out of hand.

Feel free to also use this post to express concerns about how mission building will be affected over the next short while or, indeed, we could take this elsewhere so as not to let the rest of the TPers know how we're planning to kill them :Help

A separate WhatsApp group for the mission building team would be good.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Don’t tell anyone not on the mission building team what did or did not work. And absolutely no commentary during the mission so that people aren’t looking for stuff.

2. Ask for feedback.

Apart from that, we’ll take it as it comes and if there is the occasional bust mission then so what.

Andy has created a TP Mission Builders group on Whatsapp and those already on Whatsapp have joined it.

If the commander can spot targets from a greater distance and position his section to a tactical advantage. That is more realistic than seeing a He 111 pop into existance like a quantum effect Bring it on ✌

Perhaps one more idea so as not to force the rest of the guys join Whatsapp: could Reggie create a small forum section/thread/anything similar which would be locked for the common TPers and accessible only for mission builders? That would keep all the important things inside the forum which we use as the main comms chanel anyway.

Or we can just stick to our e-mail convos and occassional TS sessions of course. Depends on what is more covenient for us.

I have not tried yet but has the extended vis range for aircraft been introduced with this patch.

Yes but the implementation is slightly odd. You can see aircraft further away, but as you get closer, or zoom, the image gets smaller and conversely, harder to see.

Unfortunately the forum idea wouldn't work as Tom and Reggie need forum admin rights, so would be able to read everything. It looks like a combination of the new WhatsApp group and the old emails/TS is going to be the way forward. Whatsapp for the shorter things we need to describe/discuss and emails/TS for the more involved stuff.

Once we've got the first mission out of the way this weekend we'll try and organise a time when we can get together to discuss whatever is needed. If possible it would be good for folks to maybe turn up for Friday practice this week as well so that we can get a handle on view distances, etc.
