There is the Gaelic (Irish/Scots) legend of the Selkie for certain, which is sometimes referred to as a Silkie - a seal-like mermaid/merman as you say.

And thanks for the welcome :)

Currently my major hurdles to overcome are with getting engine management to be second nature, learning not to disappear off at a tangent as soon as I look at my gauges and actually finding time to look out of the cockpit (or back into it once I get in formation).

Flying solo in game I can probably help my self to address some of these issues - the engine management, trimming the aircraft so I don't need to work so hard, etc, but when it comes to formation flying the game usually puts the player as the lead aircraft in any formation, so learning station keeping and formation flying is a bit challenging. Does anyone have something like a custom mission where a friendly aircraft will fly a given route and profile that I can practice with?

The positive is that it gives me great tracking practice trying to find you.

;)

I'm sure someone can knock something up.

@ Prangster if you see this, I've tried to open up the FW mini campaign missions over VL and they all result in the editor saying the mission cannot be opened or something like that.

Just a quick update. Last week Silk showed major improvement in formation flying and all that jazz. What was really nice was that he avoided all of the normal Tangmere chit chat. He's been doing the assessment flights quite well but not quite up to Tangmere ops standards, though with last Sunday's showing the bar was set pretty low - I'd have thought with the collective experience that folks would follow a brief (hah), be able to formate (hah with exceptions) and not fill up comms with chit chat!

Anyway, soon he'll have his headfacetrackinfraredhatthing and a couple of weeks after that he should be on ops or I'll send him to the Mothy and BB Emporium for corrective treatment. If I did it it'd involve retrophrenology.

Co-incidentally I have just now taken delivery of a box containing one TrackHat Clip, one trackiing camera (IR enabled) and one camera clip for mounting the camera on top of a screen. Now I just have the torture of seeing it sat on my desk at work when I want to be back home setting it up :)

With a little luck it should be installed by tomorrow's sortie. Of course, some adjustments and fine-tuning of curves and stuff will likely be needed.

I suspect that I applied to join the squadron a while before I was really prepared in terms of both equipment (Head tracking, joystick fine tuning, etc) and experience, but I intend to stick with it and rise to the challenges presented. I hope that I am identifying my mistakes and working to correct them slowly but surely and really appreciate the patient advice and encouragement I receive.

Next step for me is to keep up the practice flights for formation flying and to learn to fly more aggressively against AI enemies.

Another 10 years online and he should be there, unlike me who still finds things to learn and appreciate more on this world we inhabit.

To be fair he did shoot up Blackjack last night and as we were all on the same side this suggests he's closer to joining than he might think.

O how I chortled!
