VR hints and tips

Post by Tom »

1. Map the VR reset button in-game as it means that if you need to you can tweak your head position to get it just right.

2. Set the map opacity to quite low, then you can see through it whilst you're looking at it. Make sure you can make out the grid numbering easily though.

3. Drink bottled alcohol as it is easier to drink and there is less spillage.

4. Set your graphics lower than you would on a monitor - you don't really notice much difference anyway. My test mission is simply me v 8 Ju88s on a map with heavy cloud. You can have grass to low etc but leave clouds at Ultra. I have shifted my preset from Ultra on the monitor to Balanced and that gave me 80fps on Silk's practice server rather than 40, but I cannot see any particular difference in image quality.

5. Take the time to set up aircraft cockpit positioning properly. Personally I set up the pilot head position as close as I can to mimic real life. To do this is a pain though:

- Disable VR, set the resolution to your monitor's default.
- Restart the game.
- Set up the plane in quick mission, parked.
- Use the pilot head controls (left/right up/down forward/backwards to put the head where you want it, then save it.
- Re-enable VR.
- Re-start the game and check if you've got it tright.
- Repeat until you get it right.

6. Dry finger food is best. Even prawn toast leaves a greasy residue. Food on sticks is better but you can stab yourself.

7. Get and set up 3Dmigoto mod - it is essential especially for servers like WoL or KotA etc.

8. Tick the limit VR box in "Camera" otherwise your head can float outside the cockpit.

9. If you use a HOTAS make sure the bail out button is somehwere you can find it easily, but not too easily.

10. Have spare underwear nearby for the first time you get "flamed".

11. Try not to go "Ooooh" and "Aaaah" too much.

12. Very important (at least I think so) - turn off all on-screen aids eg tech tips and compass. If you have to have anything limit it to the compass heading.

13. Invest in one of those microwaveable heat packs for your neck - VR hurts.

14. Be careful about mods because some of them kill the framerate, eg the clouds mod halves my fps.

15. Spend some time getting the audio/TS balance right. Common sense I know but it still makes life easier.

16. Consider getting at least the demo version of VoiceAttack, as you can program up to 10 commands with it without a license key, and set it up for things you might fumble around with in the heat of the moment - you know, like bailing out of the plane when it's in flames.

I find this very important as I cannot crank my head around to look over the tail. My swivel chair helps a bit but mostly I look out over the right wing (swivelling a bit), hit my control to center view, then swivel and look to the left and I'm peering directly over the tail.

I use a TM Warthog and the paddle on the front of the stick doubles as "Center VR view" and "British/Russian brake lever" since those don't conflict unless I'm taxiing when it gets a bit awkward (but easily manageable).

First off. Is there any way to get the instruments into proper focus? zoom in and they are clear enough, but otherwise even with glasses on they seem blurred and I find this rather distracting.

Second. Is it just me or is spotting seriously more difficult in VR?

This mod helps with spotting and identifying.
Just like in real life VR spotting is something you get used to and better at the more you fly. Zoom is essential.
Using the cockpit light helps with instruments sometimes. Also make sure you have “sharpen” on in graphics settings

These are the disadvantages of VR, if you can manage them the advantage of spacial awareness not than makes up for them

Is anyone who uses the 3d Migoto mod willing to share what settings they use in it? I have it, but have never really set it up, wondering if it may help me with spotting and so on.

I only use for the 5x and 10x zoom. I map the keys for these to my joystick using this-
https://joytokey.net/en/
This gives me three zooms which are mapped to a hat switch: the VR zoom 2x; and the 10x and 5x from 3d Migoto.
I close one eye when using the 10x zoom.

The only thing to set up is the two zoom functions. By default these are configured to be on the 'Insert' (1.5x zoom) and 'Home' (5x zoom) keys, so the first set is to make sure that those are not configured to any other aircraft functions. There is also a 10x zoom function mapped to 'Page Up', but as I remember it, this is not as useful as you cannot easily relate it to what you are seeing when un-zoomed.

Tom is the resident guru, but I think that all you really need to set up is the convergence for each of the zooms. to do this you do the following:
to increase/decrease global convergence for a zoom level :
press and maintain zoom key (PRIOR, HOME or INSERT)
press multiple time Lshift+PAGE DOWN or Lshift+END key

This takes a fair amount of time and an awful log of "Lshift+PAGE DOWN or Lshift+END key" key presses. You will only very gradually notice convergence coming together. When Tom took Merlin and me through this, he had us sit in an aircraft and look at the roundel/insignia on the left wing then zoom in. When you first do this, you will see two separate crosses/stars/roundels, but when you carry out the convergence adjustment above you should see them coming closer and closer until they overlap. Once that's done pick on something a couple of hundred metres away and fine tune on that.

I'm sure that Tom will correct me if I'm incorrect.

What Silk says, though I would have used more cultured erudite language.

A couple of differences though. In action I never use the 1.5 zoom. I pretty much always use the 10x zoom and only occasionally switch to 5x, perhaps when I want to read the squadron code but not lose the overall picture.

I have also tweaked my first post to show that I have shifted from Ultra to Balanced preset and it works like a charm with no apparent loss in visual quality, or at least none that I can point at.

I downloaded the MIgoto 17.1 file, I was expecting an executable file which you would install and then have option menus, but it just seems to be a collection of files, presumably to be copied somewhere.

I think it is the background shimmering and not being able to glance at the instruments almost unconsciously that I really find uncomfortable. It is worse in some a/c than others. The P-38 in particular is an array of surfaces with the light being reflected, twinkling off them. Then there is the terrain shimmer. I may have some cheap glasses made up with a focal length of 1.5m which I think I read somewhere is what the focal depth of the rift is. Also I will play around with the IPD setting.

I have never really had a problem with running IL2 in Low or balanced settings, esp if you set the view distance to >70km.

Based on my limited RL flying experience ( A couple of years flying gliders) I can only agree that the sensation is much more like the real thing in many ways, I'll keep working on the Game aspects.

I tried to set up the 3d Migoto zoom this evening, but the convergence didn't seem to change at all, even after hitting the keys several hundred times.

Am I missing something? Or did I not try it long enough?

EDIT SOLVED: Press ALT + F9 to initiate setup!
