Trying again: Airfix (New Tool) B P Defiant: commission build...

Post by charlie » Sat Jun 16, 2018 9:48 am

Images did not seem to appear last post, so I hope this works. 'In flight' BP Defiant built for a client who creates photo-realistic images using models of aircraft that are no longer airworthy or extant. The Airfix kit is very nice but added new Browning gun barrels as the kits were not very well cast.

Great picture. Shall we start a rumor that a third-party, fan-created IL2 Bolton Paul Defiant is in the works? That's what everyone needs, a fighter with no forward firing weapons. One where you must be lower than your foe.

As all fighter aces said, give your opponent the advantages of height and never get on his six.

As anyone steeped in British aviation history knows the Defiant was brought out to counter the attack developed by Adolf Galland, where he would approach underneath a Hurricane or Spitfire and pop up when in range.

The counter tactic was for the rear gunner to watch and at the right moment instruct the pilot to roll inverted and the gunner would pour fire into the top of the Bf109 engine and canopy.

All this (and more) is detailed in the 1982 work 'Upside down Ace'. I am sure Moggy has a copy

Really, they thought that was an effective tactic

Sure. I believe Moggy will confirm the content of Commando magazine issue #4481. I quote

Alan Burnett and Colin Harvey flew as the crew of a Boulton Paul Defiant night fighter. They shared the same room and spent almost every second of every day with each other... yet the very air around them seemed to vibrate with the fierce hate they had for each other.

But, despite their bickering and brawling, they had the highest score of kills in the Group. How they kept it up was their own special secret

Great work Charlie! Is the kit from the Airfix's new tools? I remember my dad building a JA-37 Viggen in 1:48 by Airfix a few years ago and he found the fitting and moulding quite challenging.

Fantastic job on one of my favourite aircraft.

I always hoped they would make it flyable in CloD.......Me fluffing about at the pilot controls. Tom as my gunner, trying to pull out non-existent hair in frustration as I repeatedly fail to get him into a decent firing position.

What fun.
I wanna go full-horrible. Take me to the nasties.

This is the best picture of the Defiant that I can find:

Why, I hear you ask. Well it is the best pic because the thing is far away and hard to make out.

'nuff said.

I've been waiting for a comment like this - took your time!

I'm trying to remember where I scattered the ashes. In the cats' litter tray I think.
