Tangemere Pilot News

Tangmere Pilots stand down for a couple months every summer for holiday and family fun. Thanks to Merlin and Silk’s overtime efforts in training and mission hosting/design the OTU (Operational Training Flights) proceeded with several new pilots completing their qualification and joining the ready roster for resumption of regular operations this Sunday, September 9th.

Over the summer break many of us flew on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays and it was fun to try unique missions. Bunny designed another Vicious Carrot adventure where everyone (fighter jocks and bomber boys) took A-20s and flew cargo into a crater-shortened (very short!) runway to supply the troops, then turned about and made an opposite direction takeoff. Then we flew to bomb German destroyers, danced around the flak, and flew out across a beautiful, lake-strewn afternoon landscape with anxious eyes on our fuel guages. Some reached the refueling airfield on fumes whilst others found the smoothest looking scrub for an off-field landing when fuel ran out.

Those who’d lost their A-20 spawned La-5FNs at the refueling field and flew cover for the bombers trip home. The Bf-109’s we fought in the deepening twilight were darned difficult to see against the dark landscape below. As we fenced in the murk, the bombers touched down safe at home and we soon followed them in. Another great Vicious Carrot Production, Bunny!

On Tuesday we jumped into the Knights of the Air public server, attacking the Soviet fleet with FW-190A5 Jabos and tangling with the Spitfires protecting the fleet. Great fun and kudos to the Spit pilots. That’s my favorite flying, air combat with squadron buddies coordinating defense and attacks with radio calls, “Sparky, break!” or “You’re tail’s clear. Take him.” Or, “Turn right and pull that 109 in front of me.”

Last Sunday, Andy gave us his first mission design, a non-combat combination navigation exercise, puzzle solving game, and air race. In Me-110s pilots and observer/navigators flew to a series of waypoints identified by clues (some simple, some less-so) and photograph them from close range. Timed from engine start to engine shutdown, faster completion of the course added points to your score so we didn’t waste lots of time circling to see if another object fit the clue better. Take the picture and run.

It was great fun. Good show, Andy. We’ll probably do a similar mission at Christmas or some other weekend when we don’t have an official mission.

To ready for squadron regular operations resuming Sunday, September 9th we flew P-39s on our own server this week. Our P-39/A-20 campaign has four more weeks and the 39 has interesting handling qualities. After four weeks everyone will be in Bf-109Es for the 1941 drive on Moscow. I can’t wait to see more than two dozen fighters in formation!

Some screenshots would make it great - rather than a wall of text. I doubt too many will want to read a wall of text. Just my humble opinion of course. :Wink

I agree completely. Screenshots and video clips if I can get them past the censors. I'll be able to get those once my new computer is running.

Reggie, I hope you didn't mind me using your glorious banners for the official TP newsletter. They couldn't be improved, create the perfect Tangmere impression. and so I'm asking forgiveness rather than permission.
