Steam VR and OTT

Post by Tom » Wed Nov 28, 2018 7:29 pm

I had a quick play with settings today.

My Steam VR had automatically set the default application resolution to 174%. My OTT setting is 1.1. The net effect is that I am running with SS at 1.914 (1.1 x 1.74) with no visual improvement.

I used manual override (Settings > Video) to put the Steam VR resolution to 100% and gained 20fps.
In selecting the motto... 'all for one and one for all'... I have done so because it expresses what should be the creed to every Fighter Pilot. Never forget that you are an essential cog in the wheel, and if you break or fail it will let down your brother pilots, and the grimness of war allows for no such weakness.

Interesting, there's a new kid on the block about screen resolution. In some games now, you can upscale your resolution up to double the capability of your monitor. This of course comes with a huge hit on FPS, I wonder if it's the same thing?

That's a good question. I've wondered about that. I was toying with some of those settings with Skyrim VR - the default setting was 174%, just like Tom's, but I messed around with pushing Skyrim VR's specific setting up to 150%, and my OTT is typically hard set at 1.5. I really didn't notice much of an improvement, but yea - framerates dropped significantly.

I have no idea if / how the specific game app resolution is affected by the default app resolution (or vice versa)... I haven't found any info on that and am curious if it does (as in, does one override the other, or do they both affect the app in question).

I'm now getting around 90fps with my 1080Ti at altitude in BoS with settings on Ultra. That's up from about half that a couple of months ago.

I only use OTT to set ASW now and to start Oculus Home.

I now no longer run Home Beta at startup in Steam VR
Application resolution is set to 120% with manual override and the application setting for IL-2 BOS set to 120% also.

If you have an Nvidea card you can select DSR in global settings. This renders the game in a higher resolution to what you have (x1.5/x2.0/x2.5 etc) and then reduces it back to the native resolution of your monitor. You also get to adjust the smoothness at which it renders the image. What hit this has on your frame rates presumably depends on your CPU. But it certainly works re the image you get.

I think Reshade Me probably gives you more bang for the fps buck.

Except that Reshade Me has supposedly been disabled for BoS

Hmm, Looking at the forum it shows mixed opinions, someone posting on the 27th that it works fine. I'm not too sure. I'll try uninstalling it and see if I can spot the difference.
