From the Squadron Leader:
Gentlemen, now the dark forces of Nazism are sweeping across Europe there will be a fine line between hope and catastrophe. The Royal Navy used to be this country's first line of defence. Now it is the Royal Air Force. We have to protect this country's shores and the shores of all those that rely on us be they Commonwealth or peoples living in free countries. We have to take the fight to the enemy and make a stout defence into a bloody war so that the Axis forces flinch, and lose their will to endure all that must be endured.
In all the history of the Royal Air Force this war will be the first test and the yardstick by which all our future endeavours will be measured. 601 Squadron holds a proud and distinguished position at the heart of the Royal Air Force so it is for us, the pilots, ground crew and all other servicemen and women that make up this fine squadron, to hold fast and do our duty so that in the future 601 squadron can hold it's head high and say "We were there. We did what had to be done, and we did it with distinction."
We are ordinary men that are called upon to do extraordinary things. We are 601 Squadron.
